...rites of summer! Baseball and sunbathing. Picnics by the old swimming hole. Heat prostration and killer mosquitoes. Steven Spielberg movies. For the fifth consecutive summer, this tireless auteur-mogul has placed his name on a fantasy adventure or two designed to turn sentient adults into wonder-lusting children. Spielberg directed neither of the inevitable hits before us: he wrote the story and served as an executive producer of The Goonies; he shepherded Back to the Future toward production, then pretty much left the film's creators on their merry own. But his candy-smirched fingerprints are evident on both projects...

This is a daring strategy, especially since Lean is not a man who likes to explain what he is doing, much less call attention to his command of technique or to his personality or creative philosophy. ...being an at-home auteur is one's fantasy, then the camera-cum-portable recorder cannot compare with the new generation of color video cameras containing built-in recorders. Dubbed camcorders, these new contraptions are lightweight (between 4 Ibs. and 7 Ibs.) and hand held. Once again, there are Beta and VHS versions. The VHS will record up to 20 minutes of video and sound on a single, tiny cassette. To watch the minimovie, the viewer can plug the camcorder directly into a television set or slip the miniature tape into an adapter that will play it back...
