...cultivated as a literary salon, France's Ministry of Information this week was jampacked with authors of bestsellers, turning out communiques of cadenced sentences and well-chosen phrases. Handling world-wide radio broadcasts was heavy, bespectacled, sentimental Georges Duhamel, author of The Pasquier Chronicles (TIME, March 21, 1938). In a small office not far from that of Director Jean Hippolyte Giraudoux sat thin, grey-haired Andre Maurois (Ariel, Byron, Disraeli), charged with explaining the value of French culture to the world. In London sat tall, impassive, witty Paul Morand (Open All Night, Closed All Night), professional diplomat acting...

Removal of Foreign Minister Bonnet, whose name has been inextricably associated with Munich, to the Justice Ministry was at once a matter for the rejoicing of foreign opponents of appeasement like Sagittarius and for the dismay of French ones like radical Author Louis Aragon (Bells of Basel, Residential Quarter). Red Author Aragon was among the first to be called up, sent to the Front. The French are civilized. Search France in vain for concentration camps full of opposition leaders. These worthies were last week given every consideration, including the privilege of fighting-and dying-for France in front-line trenches...

When a St. Louis theatre manager fortnight ago revived the cinema's most eloquent preachment against war, All Quiet on the Western Front, that nine-year-old picture played to packed houses. Last week Universal, producers of All Quiet and of Author Erich Maria Remarque's equally tragic sequel, The Road Back, announced plans to reissue both films. To All Quiet will be added a new commentary, fore & aft, and some of the 3,000 feet snipped from the film after it left the hands of Director Lewis Milestone. Universal will also restore to The Road Back controversial...

Lenin during the Civil War, but Lenin and Trotsky together were too smart for him. In Author Souvarine's sober account of these years following the revolution, the predicament of Lenin stands out painfully: plunged by his own victory into a chaos which compelled him to backtrack step by step on the Socialist program, sick, knowing his closest henchmen to be politically imprudent, like Trotsky, or unscrupulous, like Stalin. After his death it took Stalin just two years to make himself impregnable...

...dislocations of the Franco-Prussian War, Rimbaud, who was already writing verse, ran away to Paris. There the penniless poet, little more than a pretty-faced child, slept in a barracks: the soldiers "assaulted" him. This shocking experience, which sent him shuddering home, caused not merely a "revulsion," says Author Starkie, but a sensual "revelation." At home, Rimbaud set out to shock the respectable citizens. He would stroll, dressed like a tramp, down the main street during the sacred apéritif hour, smoking a short pipe and, "what was considered most outrageous of all," smoking it bowl downwards. During...
