Usage:

William R. Thayer, the librarian, sends out a request for all sorts of Harvard material. Historical and biographical books pertaining to the College, and catalogues and reports are especially desired. It is the first purpose to collect as many books as possible about Harvard men autograph copies of works by Harvard authors, and complete files of every College magazine and paper. The second purpose is to assemble a library of several thousand volumes of the best books in many fields so that readers of the most diverse tastes will find something to interest them. There are, in the collection of about 150 volumes on exhibition, two unique volumes. One is an autograph album in which Milton signed his name in Geneva on June 10, 1639, on his return from Italy; the other is Milton's copy of Pindar; which contains copious annotations in the poet's hand. Of the works in print, the rarest is perhaps a copy of the "Obsequies of John Kean," in which Milton's Lycidas first appeared. From Mrs. Charles C. Smith, of Boston the Library has received two volumes to which interesting associations are attached. One is Antonio de Solis's "Varias poesias sagradas y profanas," Madrid, 1716, with the autograph and bookplate of the poet Southey; the other, Leigh Hunt's copy of Troya's "Del Veltro allegorico di Dante," Firenze, 1826, with manuscript marginal annotations in Hunt's hand. Several of the pamphlets bear the autograph of William Adams, who graduated from the College in 1671, and was afterwards settled in Dedham, where he died in 1685. An inscription on the pamphlet, "God's Terrible Voice in the City of London, wherein you have the Narration of the Two late dreadful Judgements of Plague and Fire inflicted by the Lord upon that City," shows that it was bought of a printer.
