Pyongyang may have a point. The Administration, U.S. critics complain, has moved on to crises in other parts of the globe, putting the 1994 agreement on autopilot. What's more, the White House underestimated how much money it needed from Congress to pay for the oil, which costs about $55 million annually. This year it asked for only $35 million, hoping to pass the tin cup among its allies. That hasn't worked, since many countries question why the world's leading economic power can't come up with the money. But U.S. lawmakers are even more reluctant to bankroll...
...There's really no sign that the economy will overheat soon," says TIME business reporter Bernard Baumohl. "But Greenspan has to maintain his role as captain of the economy. If he admits that the economy is on autopilot -- which it is right now -- the Fed loses its relevance." Usually such vocal vigilance from the Fed chairman portends a hike in interest rates. Today, they could be forgiven for taking a celebratory nip: In what might have been a rerun of last June's disastrous collision, the autopilot docking mechanism aboard a supply ship again failed -- but this time, Mir's commander managed to use the manual controls to safely dock the vessel. And inside the cargo vessel, for the cosmonaut who has everything, a new set of wrenches. Now they can fix that damn door...
...tape of the Panhandler in Chief have been made public. Put aside for a moment the questions about what was illegal and what was just unseemly, and the overall effect is oddly comforting. If nothing else, the tapes prove that the most powerful nation on earth can operate on autopilot while its President chases campaign money. What they don't appear to do so far is show whether the Democratic Party had a scheme to channel foreign cash into campaign '96, and if so, whether Clinton...
...autographic touch, the sense that one sensibility was at work on the world, picking up and discarding things, fine-tuning personal responses. In some of the later work the collective effort shades over into an almost corporate look--not slick, exactly, but overelaborated, as though done partly on autopilot...
