United's venture into extra fares was regarded as courageous by other U. S. airlines in the face of the popular acclaim which greeted Transcontinental & Western Air last autumn when it cut its fares to railroad levels. Though rivals scoffed, TWA last week complacently claimed that its low fares were proving ideal. TWA passenger traffic in November, first month the low fares were in effect, was 122% greater than in November...

Biggest fuss last week in the commodity markets which the bounding indices reflect was in copper. Metal prices at home and abroad have been rising dramatically since early autumn. Fortnight ago copper's sister non-ferrous metal, tin, was placed on virtually a 1929 production basis by the tin cartel (TIME, Jan. 18). Last week, with export copper selling as high as 12.75? per lb., the international copper cartel called off production quotas to keep the price of the red metal from soaring higher and to discourage reopening of low-grade mines...

Ever since Floyd Bostwick Odium's Atlas Corp. jumped into the tangled affairs of Utilities Power & Light Corp. in 1935. an air of electricity has hung about everything connected with the $400,000,000 holding company and its pyramiding promoter, Harley Lyman Clarke. First effort to put U. P. & L. into receivership was last autumn when a group of creditors filed a reorganization petition at Freeport, 111. The company denied insolvency (which it did again last week) and had the case transferred to Chicago. Judge Holly then denied ex-President Clarke the right to intervene except as a creditor, which he did in a new action filed in Virginia, where U. P. & L. is incorporated...

Every Crimson supporter must fully realize the damage which a change in coaching technique &next season would entail. The 1936 team gave a magnificent account of itself from the middle of the autumn on, and by any impartial observer must have been rated at Thanksgiving as so nearly the equal of any of its recent opponents as to defy comment. Without a first class coach next year, however, Harvard's lack of material would spell a disastrous season. Dick Harlow has shown himself to be a first class coach, and there is every reason to believe that with his return...
