Catholic missionaries made a fruitless attempt to acquire converts in Burma during the 16th century, but Christianity did not really gain a foothold until 1722, when two Barnabite priests from Italy started preaching in Ava and Pegu. The first Protestant missionaries landed in 1807. Six years later came the great American Baptist Adoniran Judson, "the Apostle of Burma." Born in Massachusetts, he spent 37 years in Burma-including 17 months in prison, part of the time in shackles, during the country's 1824-26 war with Britain. It was Judson who first translated the Bible into Burmese. Relatively unsuccessful...
...Hughes actually seemed to seek publicity. The handsome heir to an oil-drilling-equipment fortune, he bought his way into the movie industry, produced Hell's Angels and Scarface, discovered Jean Harlow, personally designed the brassiere that made Jane Russell famous. He was a friend to Lana Turner, Ava Gardner, Katharine Hepburn. Then he steadily became more of a loner. He secretly married green-eyed Actress Jean Peters in 1957. Now they live in a French Regency chateau in Bel Air, surrounded by high walls, bodyguards and rumors...
This winter, for instance, Paul Newman will enter his 41st year. So will Jack Lemmon. While nobody was looking, Charlton Heston, Marlon Brando and Doris Day turned 41, Ava Gardner 42, Judy Garland 43. Montgomery Clift and Mickey Rooney are 44. Robert Stack has reached 46, Joey Bishop and William Holden 47. Dean Martin and Raymond Burr have hit 48, Gregory Peck and Kirk Douglas 49, Ingrid Bergman 50. Loretta Young could now be properly billed as Loretta Middle-Aged at 52. And as for Gary Grant...
...from Betty Grable's legs, John Barrymore's profile, Shirley Temple's seven-year-old scrawl ("Love to the World") and his ex-Wife Ava Gardner's feet, Singer Frank Sinatra, 49, knelt, did the old Hollywood salaam and planted his palms in the wet concrete beside the rococo Grauman's Chinese Theater. Then Frank struck a Jolsonesque pose for Daughters Nancy and Tina and about 3,000 faithful who turned up for the messy rites, some of them dangling from the limbs of trees...
First came Florence, the boutiques and the gags. Glans covered one pair of pants with another (toreador on the bottom, pantaloons on top), while Ava-golf finished off a long knit dinner dress with two balloons (slit to accommodate feet), left it to Pucci to put fans at the tail ends of a linen evening suit. There was Fabiani's transparent black chiffon dress, dubbed (by Fabiani) "the sexiest in Italy," Micia's shift made out of black poker chips, Trico's black knit, orange-bordered at-home outfit (complete with a ring to be worn...
