...earned $65.3 million, or ten times Citroën's profits, on just about the same sales: $2.1 billion. Peugeot offers a complete line of cars, in contrast to Citroën, which has concentrated on the upper and lower ends of the market with its avant-garde luxury lines and spartan, eccentrically styled Deux Chevaux. The merged company will be headed by Peugeot Director-General Francois Gautier, 67, but Michelin tire company, which owns a controlling share of Citroën's stock, is expected to retain a similar position in the combined enterprise. Not surprisingly, French...
Sweet Eros, a play by Terrence McNally, is still running at Theater Two near Kendall Square. This is Cambridge's current brush with the avant garde, so if you go in for that kind of thing you might as well see this before the U.S. Attorney follows his Boston act and closes this one down. It's playing with Michael McClure's The Beard, depicting the sexual confrontation between Billy the Kid and Jean Harlow. This could have been a lot better, but it's sort of cute. For the next two nights the performances begin at 8. Sunday...
Because he has given himself so much time, Eustache can do things much more subtly than he could have in a feature-length film. So many conceptual avant-garde movies have burdened us with their length--like Andy Warhol's eight hours of the Empire State building--that we are accustomed to associate subtlety with economy. But nothing in The Mother and the Whore is superfluous, and sometimes the long stretch of time allows for effects impossible in shorter films. By the time Alexandre brushes past his ex-lover Gilberte in the supermarket, for example, we have forgotten her completely...

He likes Hitchcock, Mike Nichols, Woody Allen, Blow-up, nothing fancy. Nothing experimental or avant-garde for him. He makes full-length feature films on commercial subjects and with big-name stars. One purpose of Counterpoint was to supplement applications to the film schools at USC and UCLA, the two major feeders for TV and Hollywood, and partly for this reason the picture is flashy--over...
Endgame, by Samuel Beckett, in a production by Andre Gregory's Manhattan Project, an avant-grade theater group which I guess is based in Manhattan. It's about the end of the world, I believe, or at least the end of its characters. Opens tonight at 8 at the Loeb...
