...sass without detracting from Aristophanes’ original atmosphere. New peppy rhymes, cheeky dialogues of sexual innuendo, and even a short dance clip of The Robot unobtrusively sidled into line among the lyrical lines of the translation. The War on Terror, Yale University, and the “avian flu”—all were cunningly brought out onto the stage. When a flock of angry birds closed in around the enterprising Peisetaerus and Euelpides, a hysterical Euelpides broke into song, in a desperate attempt to placate their attackers. His choice of song...

...Illinois Democrat rode into town with a halo and has worked hard ever since to prove he's a mere mortal. Obama, 44, has focused on important but low-profile issues, such as making sure the U.S. is prepared for an outbreak of avian flu and securing nuclear-weapon stockpiles in the former Soviet Union. No U.S. agency is discussing the day-to-day contact that poultry workers have with potentially infected birds. To avoid an outbreak of avian flu, growers, poultry companies, unions and the government must work together to ensure that workers have proper protection...

That theory is the framework for all modern biology, from the study of fossils to the mapping of the genome, but it is also profoundly practical in application. Scientists are debating the likelihood and timing of a horrific pandemic caused by avian flu. Those who worry about that possibility and reject evolution live in a world of contradiction. If the H5N1 virus, the infective agent for avian flu, adopts a new lifestyle and moves directly from one human host to another, it would be because it evolved that capacity...
