Federal assistance will be critical in addressing shortfalls like these, but school districts should also find more creative ways to avoid deficits. The recession should provide an opportunity for administrators to go beyond the tried-and-true remedies of property-tax hikes and layoffs. New techniques, including efficiency analyses of individual schools, are needed. Moreover, the recession should spur those outside the public-school system to think of ways they can help. Students, at Harvard and elsewhere, should view the budget shortfalls as a call to serve their communities by volunteering at schools. Private foundations should also look inward...

...leading organization in the field of reproductive medicine, recommends that a woman under the age of 35 should have no more than two embryos implanted by way of in vitro fertilization (IVF). That limit was chosen, says Sean Tipton, director of public affairs for the society, in order to avoid multiple births through IVF that would expose both mother and offspring to significant health risks. "The Gang of 14 was focused on a particular target, and that was to avoid the nuclear option," Nelson said in an interview with TIME. "Here, not everybody is supportive of a stimulus package to begin with, and all of us have questions about the amount and what's in the package. When that's the case, the number of differing opinions that you have multiplies...
