...Down the Road Anyone who is in business in 2012 will get business. For all their problems, there's no question that the Detroit Three will have some competitive cars. GM has already made the case with its award-winning Chevy Malibu. The 2009 Buick LaCrosse recently topped all midsize competitors in the dependability ratings of J.D. Power & Associates. That's a positive sign, given that Buick is such an important brand for GM in China. Ford, which is in the best shape of the Detroit Three, has found success in its new Edge, in its F-150 pickup...

Innovation also blooms in unlikely places such as southern Bavaria. In the town of Penzberg, the Islamic Forum, built in 2005, last year won a Wessobrunner Architekturpreis, an award granted every five years for outstanding Bavarian architecture. A simple block of glass and pearly stone, the Forum beckons Muslims and non-Muslims alike to enter through two doors built to resemble an open book. "It's a place of communication," explains its Bosnian-born architect, Alen Jasarevic, in an e-mail. "Vast windows and openings in the façade, even in the prayer room, invite the citizens of Penzberg...

...This is not to say that Pixar movies are inevitably superior to the DreamWorks stuff - though Oscar voters seem to think so. Eight years ago, when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences established an award for Best Animated Feature, DreamWorks got the first one, for Shrek. Since then, Katzenberg's homegrown product has been shut out (the studio distributed Nick Park's veddy English Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit), while Pixar has won four: Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Ratatouille and WALL-E. "Each year I do one DreamWorks project," actor Jack Black told the crowd...

Skidmore has boosted its financial-aid budget 8% this year by trimming travel, faculty raises, renovation plans and commencement festivities. While the cost of attending the college rose $2,000 this year, the average aid award increased $2,300. In addition to $7,000 worth of federal and state grants, work-study earnings and federal loans, the average financial-aid applicant will pocket $28,000 in Skidmore grants. Skidmore, like many of its peer schools, also allocates funding for superstars with financial need, a practice known as "preferential packaging." The most desirable students--the ones who blew...
