...Harmony Silk Factory doesn't strain to be The Great Malaysian Novel. That's a deliberate decision by Aw, 33, who considers himself "100% Malaysian," though born in Taipei (to Malaysian-Chinese parents), raised in Kuala Lumpur, educated at Cambridge and now resident in London. Meaney manages to portray Jimmy with both the hardened veneer of a country boy who has made it in the big world and the aw-shucks-ness little brothers almost necessarily possess. Hill is the wizened Irish grandfather we all wish we could have to tell us stories by a roaring fire.
