...picture of semi-jocular humility, and looking very much at ease in his new role as the quiet, smart guy to Bush's grinning front man. The former chief of staff, congressman, defense secretary and oilman didn't thrill folks with his speech, keeping it short and slightly aw-shucks, but showed no fear whatsoever. He did look a generation older than his running mate - the classic middle-aged white guy with a paunch - and no one mentioned Cheney's faulty ticker.
