Once on the other side of Johnston Gate, however, things looked considerably different. Instead of engaging in philosophical discourse while sipping mocha in between classes, I stood in line at Annenberg for chicken marsala and stumbled through awkward introductions with my new classmates (Rena Xu; Holworthy; Pittsburgh; Biochemistry). Instead of reaching enlightenment in a stately wood-paneled chamber, I found my way to Cabot Library (“They never showed THIS in the brochures!” my freshman roommate exclaimed indignantly). And far from knowing instinctively where my niche at this large school lay, I treaded uncertainly...
When I came to Harvard, along with many of my fellow awkward, nebbishy companions, it was to escape the world of jocks and cheerleaders, of the divisions of cool and uncool. I went to a Jewish high school in Montreal, so we didn’t have any real jocks (we called them Rabbis in Nikes), and we certainly had no cheerleaders (We’ve got Torah yes we do, we’ve got Torah, how about you!), but we did have in-crowds and losers, and social ostracism could be extremely harsh...
...production hit tones of hilarity and tragedy. Laurel T. Holland ’06 plays a woman whose husband began cheating on her, supposedly because she refused to shave between her legs. As an awkward hush fell over the auditorium, she told the audience exactly why she didn’t want to. Later in the show, a very different key was stuck when Shawna J. Strayhorn ’07 cracked up play-goers with a rant about the discomforts of tampons, douching, and thongs. She even wondered aloud why lingerie companies don’t sell cotton panties...
...Some of the episodes have been grouped into story arcs, such as the "Schoolboys" sequences that humorously outline the guys' awkward adjustment to Western culture. Japanese men who studied by day and worked as house "boys" in the morning and evening were called "schoolboys," and this arc provides a fascinating glimpse at turn of the century domestic life. All of the guys try their hand at being a "schoolboy" but in classic comic style they all repeatedly get the "go home" treatment after screwing up through misunderstandings like removing the stove to clean it or accidentally teaching the parrot...
...awkward to sit near him and inflict yourself upon him. I desperately wanted to. He didn’t dislike company… but I was shy. But he didn’t give the impression he minded company. It was especially awkward, deliciously awkward, when his songs would plan in the dining hall. Island In The Sun, at least 3 times...
