Madonna's awkward, indecisive characterization seems calculated to help paper over those gaps and sustain suspense by keeping the audience from reaching conclusions. Thus the question "Can she act?" cannot be answered. The shrewdness in her performance is clear, but so, alas, is her thinking process: she lacks ease and naturalness. Mantegna, by contrast, superbly manages his character's clashing mental states. Silver is captivating, especially in a second-act tantrum that is equal parts rage, hurt, con-artist scam and genuine grief at a betrayal...
...result was notice-me behavior -- eating asparagus with her fingers, while wearing gloves, at a White House dinner -- and a hardness to anyone who seemed less tough than she. Her shy, awkward daughter Paulina, for example, got little compassion. Alice let it be known that Paulina was the issue of her affair with Senator William Borah, not of her marriage to Speaker of the House Nick Longworth. Preposterous contrasts are always good for a laugh. Alone onstage in Saddle River, the comedian raises himself to the company of heroes, soliloquizing that "it is necessary to struggle, to be embattled, to be knocked down and to have to get up." Look at history's great leaders, he says. They have all trod the wilderness at times. Churchill, De Gaulle, Adenauer. If the audience thinks such comparisons absurd, clearly the comedian...
There was an awkward formality to Kirk's unity meeting. A little nervous laughter broke out when Jesse Jackson asked, "Don't any of you want to be my Vice President? No heavy lifting, and I'll let you go to all the good ( funerals." But behind his smile was a clear understanding that Kirk's ploy was really a way to neutralize Jackson's clout...
...Israel publications such as the New Republic, several Jewish organizations, 30 U.S. Senators sympathetic to Israel and last week President Reagan have expressed their impatience with Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir's hardheadedness. People seem to be catching on that to dance on eggshells about Israel is not only weirdly awkward, it opposes all that one understands both Jewishness and Americanness...
