...Three Kings seems at first quite fantastical: four bored soldiers, AWOL with a hum-vee, searching for buried treasure. With the grizzled Major Archie Gates (George Clooney), a disillusioned officer leading their illicit adventure, these swashbucklers embark upon their search for hidden Kuwaiti gold led by a secret map concealed in a captured Iraqi's ass, affectionately dubbed "the ass map," with a duffell bag filled with grenade rigged nerf footballs. Denied any of the war's action, these four soldiers enthusiastically seek their last chance to blow things up, now that the war is officially over. Russell goes...

...compete at an advanced level, the travel team will have already left the station. Her peers will be making deft one-touch passes while she's still learning to dribble. That leaves as her only option the easygoing recreation league, where the coaching is desultory and players often go AWOL. While many parents of kids on "rec" teams equate "keeping it fun" with holding down the level of instruction and competition, the kids often see things differently. Kosovo reflects what he has cared about, fought for and forced onto the agenda, even when political prudence would argue for making himself...

...seasons he missed to serve in the Army. Like Williams, with whom he was eternally yoked at the center of the Boston-New York rivalry, DiMaggio saw the heart of his career cut out by the sharp edge of war. From ages 28 to 30, he was AWOL from the thing he did best, at the time of life when he probably could have done it better than ever...

Although legal precedent says personal conduct is not grounds for impeachment, our Commander in Chief put our country at risk [NATION, Oct. 5]. He was AWOL, both physically and mentally, on the public's time. He violated his allegiance to the country. I find it offensive that our President had to poll-search instead of soul-search before he would grudgingly and belatedly apologize to the voting public. He keeps repeating that he wants to do the job the people elected him to do. After years of part-time duty, he is aware, at least when it's convenient, that...
