...best, Simon says he feels not like a writer but like some sort of secretary, a middleman between the characters and the paper. Furthermore, he believes in the playwright's axiom that "great plays are not written, but rewritten." Rewriting, Simon feels, is "like taking a test, finding out the answers, and then taking the test again the next day." He admits that he has often been tempted to rewrite some of his past plays, but always opts to start a new play. "Every time I believe that this will be the perfect one, but of course it never will...
...doesn't know what he's talking about." So said Minnesota Republican Campaign Strategist Vin Weber last week. He was assessing his own state's topsy-turvy politics, but his comment could be applied equally well to races elsewhere. Suddenly the power of incumbency-long an axiom of American politics-no longer seems to apply. Nowhere is this clearer than in the Midwest, where revolts by voters threaten to turn three veteran politicians out of office...
This in turn revived the old Roman axiom, "A Pope is not elected against the Curia." (Besides that...

The axiom holds true for films, as for everything else, that which one man loves may well sicken another. This sort of critical and public debate should be encouraged; after all, it makes for a better-informed audience and we can only hope that a better-informed audience will demand and eventually get better films...
...axiom of equal rights for all people by which Shahak says he guides his organization has pushed him to the forefront of Israeli political dissidence. Although his group concentrates on individual human rights and thus has no strictly political aim, when Shahak discusses its concerns he touches on a wide range of social and economic ills in Israel. He regards these problems as largely the result of a repressive political and judicial system. The denial of rights to individuals has not only undermined Israel's security, Shahak claims, but has also "blinded" Israel's Jewish population, as well as world...
