Track 1: Better This does not sound like 1994. The first 30 seconds are like a Rihanna song with this woman singing the chorus. Then Axl and the guitars break in, hard. It's catchy and rocking and modern sounding, and his voice sounds all over the place, in an impressive way. The chorus is from the woman, and there are some sound effects - like a rap song. And there are two short guitar solos, either from Slash, Buckethead or Bumblefoot - the first of which has a silly, fun Eddie Van Halen quality. All I get from the lyrics...
...gonna call the President/ gonna call a private eye/ gonna get the IRS/ gonna need the FBI," which I can't get out of my head. It interrupts its super-rockingness with little bits of mellowness to keep me interested, and then some weird named guitarist rocks out and Axl's right back to calling the President. I play this all the time. I would love it a lot more if some band that wasn't heavy metal played it. Grade...
...forms. In order to handle this contingency, I offer you: THREE ANKLE-HIGH TIPS 1) Do not pretend that you are not wearing ankle boots by covering them up with jeans. Not only does this completely defeat the purpose of ankle boots but it also makes you look like Axl Rose when he tried to sport cornrows. ...like a bomb, rather than up, each focuses on one of the book's six major characters, then repeats the cycle. Each set begins with Ray Beam, a burnt-out pop star of ten years ago whose descent from debauched musical godling to weird, unproductive recluse resembles that of Axl Rose. He suddenly seems to find his muse in Lily, a young Hispanic-American woman whose side of the story bookends each chapter cycle. Initially hired as Ray's personal assistant, Lily cautiously allows herself to be wooed by him in spite of such quirks as his carrying around...
...hype surrounding the first Guns N' Roses tour in nearly a decade seemed specious from the start, as only one original member of the band was involved. And he was the most volatile. Axl Rose failed to appear for the tour's opening show on Nov. 7 in Vancouver, allegedly owing to travel problems. Fans--fueled by thwarted nostalgia or beer--rioted. Then Rose, after playing to some half-empty stadiums, went AWOL again, in Philadelphia on Dec. 6. Again fans rioted. Last week, without giving a specific reason, the tour promoter canceled all remaining dates. Fans so far seem...
