Cycles of destruction and rebirth are hardly unknown to the Americas' native peoples. The Aymara people of Bolivia have a word for times of war, enslavement and privation: pachakuti, or the disruption of the universe. But pachakuti also contains the assumption that the cosmic order will be restored, ushering in a period of peace and harmony, or nayrapacha.
