This pragmatism is a faith that recalls nothing so much as the objectivist philosophy of the novelist and social critic Ayn Rand (The Fountainhead, Atlas Shrugged), which Greenspan has studied intently. During long nights at Rand's apartment and through her articles and letters, Greenspan found in objectivism a sense that markets are an expression of the deepest truths about human nature and that, as a result, they will ultimately be correct...
...world has come to know him through his opaque congressional testimony, friends know him as the Juilliard-trained saxophone player who spent two years touring with a swing band before taking up economics. The quiet romance of the man has always been present if you looked hard enough. Ayn Rand told friends, "What I like about A.G. is that basically he has his feet on the ground. I love his love for life on earth. He really is a passionate person in his own quiet way." Greenspan, who ran his own consulting firm on Wall Street for nearly 30 years...
...dreamers and the philosophically inclined (especially the social studies fanatics of Harvard), the Harvard Objectivist Club (HOC) welcomes interested students to attend its weekly meetings, lectures and videotape viewings. "One can still grasp Rand's meaning," notes Anderson, "without being an expert on continental philosophy or the English empiricists." Oh goodie. E-mail hoc@hcs.harvard.edu for meeting times and more information. Happy pondering...

I was all, like, impressed, and wanted to show him that I was smart too, so I was about to bring up the need for primary AND secondary laws in a society--and then I farted. Everyone heard me, even the proseminar on Hegel next door! I was so embarrassed...
Somerville Theater seemed like a rather unusual place for Williams to perform--the theater's interior is scattered with an odd array of gilded Corinthian columns painted black and silver reminiscent of severe Ayn Rand lightning bolts. The rest of the theater had an almost sickingly disproportionate amount of mauve. A mostly middle-aged crowd, situated comfortably in plush seats, waited anxiously for Williams arrival...
