...married women fare no better than the minorities. These are retro, sitcom-style wives, bland and humorless. Ronnie frets about kitchen tiles. Lucy lusts after the Fabio-type yoga instructor (Carlos Ponce, ripping off Hank Azaria's shtick). Cynthia lives to please her controlling husband. At least two of them seem to have shackles to throw off, but in the movie, the only things they free themselves from are their clothes, so we can see how they each measure up to those most demanding of standards of director Peter Billingsley: the ability to rock a bra and panties...
...Cera and a few of the bit players to try to make us laugh. The funnier (the superlative is not appropriate) scenes involve Hank Azaria as Abraham, who attempts a group circumcision on Zed, Oh and his son Isaac (Christopher Mintz-Plasse). "Trust me," he tells them. "It's going to be a very sleek look." Abraham is down on Sodom, as you can imagine, but that's where Zed and Oh are bound (there's a subplot revolving around rescuing the women they love from slavery). They meet up - again - with Cain (he's a running joke...
...Smithsonian's entire multistory subterranean warehouse of treasured antiquities and zoological oddities. (If monkeys could communicate, they might have something to say about the lopsided number of screenplays predicated on the antics of miscreant simians.) Even worse, Ahkmenrah has a brother, the crazily dressed, maniacally lisping Kahmunrah (Hank Azaria), who, less loved by his parents, intends to use the tablet to exact his revenge and rule the world. If Larry doesn't do something, it's not just his exhibitionist friends who are stuffed. (See TIME's summer entertainment preview...
...this, and the expert work of Tim Curry, David Hyde Pierce, Hank Azaria and Ramirez, well and truly earned Spamalot last year's prize for Best Musical. And it may well sweep the Olivier Awards next spring. Which is fine by me, since I'm as fond of saucy Broadway musicals as of silly-smart British TV comedy. If an impudent young satire like Monty Python and the Holy Grail should mellow into a fat and happy Spamalot, that's just the normal lifespan of transgressive pop culture: first to be dismissed as shocking, then to be accepted as trailblazing...
...attention. This season, it embarks on a national tour, and its first stop is Boston’s Colonial Theater on 106 Boylston Street. When I saw this show in New York, it boasted Tim Curry (“Rocky Horror Picture Show”) as King Arthur, Hank Azaria (“The Simpsons”) as the bloodthirsty Sir Lancelot, and the Broadway superstar Sara Ramirez as the Lady of the Lake. I dare not go over all of the classic routines from the movie which have been adapted into film, jokes which I have had memorized...
