...Azimuth Defense. Possibly Pompidou or another new President of France will relax De Gaulle's pro-Arab stance in the Middle East. This would simplify the task of the U.S., Britain and the Soviet Union in proposing an Arab-Israeli settlement during the current four-power discussions. France's next President, whoever he is, probably will not bring French forces back into NATO or soon abandon the force de frappe. De Gaulle emphasized that French defenses had been reoriented to repel an attack from any direction: from the U.S.S.R., from a European neighbor -even from the U.S. Before...

...radiation detector station in Turkey, where giant radar scanners monitor nuclear-bomb activities inside the Soviet Union by rotating full circle every 90 seconds, a computer began to chatter every time the dish passed an azimuth heading of 270°. This area, almost completely opposite in direction from Russia, showed up on maps as the desolate valley of the River Jordan in Palestine. At length, when the scanner was again approaching this heading, the puzzled controllers pushed the computer's "speak" button. Reels whirled, relays clicked, and the message came pounding out: NO, NEGATIVE, THERE IS NO BOMB...

Stehling believes that the rocket must be launched in exactly the right direction, preferably 45° from the vertical. The balloon will carry an azimuth and delination mounting, probably a gyroscope, which will point the rocket eastward by "locking on to" the sun. After it is launched, it would require guidance only in the second stage. There are two possible ground-control methods: beaconed radar or moving intersecting radio beams. The third, satellite stage would be unguided and would carry only a 30-lb. payload of instruments or experimental animals. According to his calculations, it would reach 18,400 m.p.h...

...precision system is the heart of G.C.A. It consists of two radars which "scan" the approach area with fixed antennae. The elevation beam shows the plane's altitude and its rate of descent. The azimuth beam shows the direction of the plane's approach and its distance from the landing field. In both indicators, the plane's air track appears on calibrated error meters-with a hairline representing the ideal approach. On the basis of these meter readings, the pilot gets such verbal instructions as "Change course to 064 degree heading" or "Increase rate of descent...
