When public utility repair crews digging at a busy Mexico City street corner in February made their find, it created an instant sensation. Rumors arose that the long-lost treasure of Montezuma II, the Aztec emperor at the time of the Spanish conquest, had finally been located. As archaeologists roped off the site, indignant Mexicans protested: "We have a right to the gold. We pay our taxes...

...dandy of American art is a woman, Louise Nevelson. Nobody is more recognizable: the fine, blade-nosed Aztec face with its monstrous false eyelashes, like clumps of mink, is as manifestly the property of an artist as Picasso's monkey mask. The sight of Nevelson under full sail-mole-colored hunting cap, peasant flounces, Chinese brocade and wolfskin, bronze pendants clanking, boar's teeth rattling-is one of the few spectacles of complete self-possession in American life; the 19th century poet who walked his live lobster on a ribbon outside the Ritz could not have looked more...

Specifically, the room melliflously known as 'Burr B' must have been designed with tricksters like me in mind. The room is constructed along the dimensions of a Aztec temple, giving the person sitting in the last and top row a fine range of the classroom, perfect for taking notes, counting bald heads, and spitting. For three years, I have taken finals in that room, and every year I try to improve on myself...

Christianity. Though the conquistadors had crushed Juan Diego's people ten years before, the Virgin affectionately called him "my son" and said to him in the Aztec tongue: "Here I will offer all my love, my pity, my aid and my protection to the people." She ordered the Aztec to tell the bishop to build a sanctuary to her on a nearby hillside, where the Spanish had destroyed a temple to the Aztec goddess of earth and corn known as the "Little Mother." When the bishop refused, the Virgin made Castilian roses bloom among the hillside rocks, and Juan...
