...Services, which provides roughly 40 cleaners at various locations throughout Harvard's Cambridge campus, is planning on laying off the equivalent of four full-time employees at the Harvard Kennedy School, according to Wayne M. Langley, director of higher education for the Service Employees International Union Local 615. Daniel B. ...some see the turnaround model as a mostly hypothetical solution that has yet to provide results. "It's the audacity of hope in the extreme," says Mike Petrilli, who analyzes education programs and policy at the Thomas B. Fordham Institute, a conservative think tank. "There are very few examples in the country where we've been able to turn around failing schools. And those are just a handful. To go from a few dozen schools to 5,000 is quite audacious. In all of pop music up to the arrival of the Beatles, whenever we talk about a hot new trend - from ragtime to jazz to swing to R&B to rock 'n' roll - what we're talking about is new dance rhythm coming in. The British bands were modern in their harmonies and songwriting, their song forms were very interesting and they did new things with instruments. But their rhythms were steadily old-fashioned...
