...Perception Proof? The bachot, or "bac," is drawn up by 30 eminent French professors, who submit it to the Education Ministry. Then the exam goes to the National Printing Office, where no printer sets more than a single line of type. The printed copies are kept in safes until three days before exam time, when envelopes containing the dreaded test are distributed to regional centers. At the same hour throughout the country, the seals are broken to start the trial that every French youth has worked toward for 16 to 18 years...

...Place in Line. American, Braniff and Mohawk airlines recently ordered a total of 31 British Aircraft Corp. BAC One-Eleven short-range jet transports worth $83.7 million. At the other end of the jet spectrum, among the big long distance models, Continental Air Lines fortnight ago signed up for three Concorde Mach 2.2 supersonic jet trans ports being built by a British-French consortium for delivery beginning in 1970. To fill this need, British Aircraft Corp. developed the sleek BAC One-Eleven. ...BAC One-Eleven are remarkably similar. Roughly one-half as big as a Boeing 707, both planes have two fanjet engines mounted on the sides of the rear fuselage, cruise at about 550 m.p.h. and accommodate up to 83 passengers. Price: in the $2,500,000 to $3,000,000 bracket. The big difference is that the BAC One-Eleven will make its maiden flight in June; the DC-9 will not be ready to fly before 1965. And the British have already sold 41 One-Elevens, including twelve to Braniff, while Douglas does not yet have a single order...

...normal take-off run to as little as 3,000 ft. Trouble is that by December 1963, when the first YS 11 production model is scheduled for completion, the skies may well be swarming with competition from short-range pure jets such as British Aircraft Corp.'s BAC One-Eleven, which also aspires to the title...
