Genius and passion. To end an artistic endeavor of any sort with the intent and feeling that one had in its beginning represents the greatest expression of both. The Bach Society Orchestra's final concert of the season contained just such a note of finality. Conductor Evan Christ concluded his BSO career Saturday night, replete with the show-stopping presence of world-class composer and conductor Alan Hovahness and a coterie of soloists. ...good amount of credit is due to the Bach Society's Sarah Hicks and Evan Christ for directing very possibly the best orchestra that has played at a student production this year. Crisp and explosive, the strings also show an ability to caress and coax the ear in the in subtler arias. With the exception of several errors in the French horn solo in the second act, the orchestra meets the challenge of Rossini's score...

After 13 variations evoking in turn Bach, George Winston and Liszt, Rzewski plunged from a protracted Beethovenian trill into a truly staggering display of improvised fire-works for his cadenza. In a few minutes Rzewski demonstrated his command of Harlem stride bass, cartoonish sound effects, and Chopinesque fabric melody, while referring back to Beethoven just often enough to excuse his departures. The conclusion was a gradual rise from the lowest D-flat (tonic for the Beethoven) to the highest note on the keyboard, which was repeated more and more softly and less and less frequently until after a long rest...
