...good form as in the Pennsylvania game. In the first place Captain Daly's injured knee will keep him out of the play, and Kendall, Ellis, Sawin, Hallowell and Campbell have not yet recovered from the effects of the Pennsylvania game. This leaves the eleven with a substitute back-field and substitute ends, which in itself is enough to weaken the team considerably. Besides this the whole team has deteriorated very much during the week, and is not able to play nearly as well as a week...
Daly's work in the back-field was good and perhaps the best part of his game. The Yale team showed so much unexpected strength that his plan of attack required complete and constant changes some of which were open to slight criticism. Sawin was decidedly the best halfback in the game. He played in perfect accord with Daly, and clipped many yards off of McBride's punts by his clever, dodging runs. He made the longest gain of the day by a 33 yard run around Gibson in the first half. The end plays and double passes around...
...Freshman eleven defeated the Worcester Academy team at Worcester on Saturday, by the score of 11 to 0. The Freshmen had a slight advantage in weight, and their back-field played together better than that of Worcester. Fumbling was their worst fault. Worcester played a stubborn, defensive game, allowing but one touchdown in each half. Their high tackling, however, allowed the Freshman backs to gain many times after they should have been stopped...
...Sawin, and hard line-plunging by Hurley, Warren and Ellis, a costly fumble, or offside play would give the ball to Bates, and lessen the chances for a touchdown. Hurley and Sawin were the only backs who went into the line low. The hurdling style of Ellis and Warren, although effective yesterday, will not gain ground against a strong team. In the back-field, Sawin did excellent work. He outpunted Putnam repeatedly and by following his interference well, made several long runs...
...Peyton, Lewis and Blagden to choose from, there is now little doubt but that the tackle positions will be well filled this year. Burnett is now able to play on the team and will probably, with Donald, be given a chance today. None of the constant changes in the back-field are permanent, or even significant. Gierasch has recovered from his slight injury, and Reid will play in the Brown game on Saturday...
