Backer of the idea was Joseph M. Tucker, shrewd U.S. vice president of Canada's largest farm-machinery manufacturers, Massey-Harris Co., Ltd. Tucker sold the War Food Administration and the Canadian Government on the idea of allocating to Massey-Harris enough engines and steel to build 500 of the self-propelled combines (see cut).
