Unfortuneately, Steven Jacob's Candide isn't exaggerated enough, and seems very flat against the background provided by the rest of the production. He sings very well, but his acting relies too heavily on blow-dried good looks and glassy stares, even for a character as naive as Candide. The fault may be with the director for trying too hard to make Candide reflect the contrast between Dr. Pangloss's world view and the world itself. The result, however, is a boring character substituted for a sympathetic one. Jacob's performance doesn't hinder one's enjoyment of the show...

...ideas and views of West Germany's Paul Schulz [April 2] certainly are not reflective of the Lutheran faith, as his defrocking attested. So why should he be trying to hold on to a Lutheran background, and why is he accusing his accusers of anything...

Sirica's unorthodox background probably helped him deal with the nation's unprecedented crisis. The son of a luckless Italian immigrant, he confesses that he sometimes lived beyond the law. Hired as a mechanic's helper in Washington, D.C., the pudgy 14-year-old discovered a way to make his job easier. Instead of completely cleaning out grease caps on the automobiles of 1918, he merely scraped off the top layer of old grease and applied a little new. Irate owners complained that their cars still squeaked. Before he could be fired, Sirica quit...

...jazz activity will force some hard and painful decisions. Close to home, Jonathan Swift's is hosting two events of particular interest this week. Sunday and Monday they will present Sun Ra and his Intergalactic Arkestra, a happening by any standard. Sun Ra is simply outrageous; his age and background are unclear, but he wanders around our planet saying things like: The intergalactic music in its present phase of presentation will be correlative to the key synopsis of the past and to the uncharted multipotential planes outside the bounds of the limited earth-eternity futre... and playing music that...

Wednesday night, the Charles Mingus Reunion Band is playing at Swift's. The Master had definite ideas about how his music was to be played, and no one left his Jazz Workshop Group without a solid background in Mingus-Music. Trumpeter Ted Curson, saxophonist Booker Ervin, drummer Dannie Richmond, and the other members of the band all worked extensively with Mingus--their performance should be very special. The awesome bass chair will be filled by Charlie Haden, reason enough to hear a set of swinging inspiration...
