...Avalon is a concert club (They Might Be Giants, the Beta Band, Cheap Trick, Guided By Voices, and Edwin McCain have played there) and a dance club all rolled into one. Visiting DJs spin occasionally on Fridays and Saturdays. The new Avalon is chic beige and streamlined architecture, with backlit alcohol glowing by the bar. Sadly, its infamous second-story bar that was perfect for scoping the floor for hotties is now located on the first floor. But fear not; Avalon is still home to excellent dance music and glamorous patrons. Wear black or the hippest clubbing attire...

...have always been a Princess and the Pea kind of sleeper. The slightest noise--even the sound of a page being turned--is enough to make me sit bolt upright, as if a torpedo had just slammed into the powder room. E-books are noiseless. ...well conceived: the whole stage was painted like a warped chessboard, and props and costumes were kept simple. Above the stage, a screen used mainly for lighting effects concealed the rhythm section of the orchestra. During one of Florence's songs, "Nobody's Side," the screen was backlit so that the rhythm section could suddenly be seen through the screen. This, like the slide shows, was startling and sporadic--a great but underutilized effect...

...Mahal of tenpins opened in February. Its 80 lanes, under a 42-ft. ceiling, are wider than a football field; it has mauve banquettes, purple and green trim and permanent seating for 1,100 spectators. Scoring is fully automatic and displayed on the world's longest rigid, backlit video screen. Every aspect of the operation is overseen from a computerized command center on the fifth level. From there, high above the bowling floor, executive director Reg Pearson looks down on an ongoing tournament in full swing. The crash of bowling balls, the staccato of falling pins, the clatter of automatic...
