Four days and 3.3 million miles after its closest encounter with Saturn last month, the Voyager 1 spacecraft cast a last backward glance and transmitted this stunning portrait of the ringed giant. The photograph shows a crescent Saturn casting a shadow on its own rings, from the perspective a traveler might get by approaching from the stars, rather than from the interior reaches of the solar system. Re-created bit by electronic bit in computers at Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and released last week, the shot is so detailed that patches of the planet can be glimpsed through...

...practiced revivalist can supply a modern translation and make it sound trendy. The 1930 recommendation of "respect for the physical earth" glosses into ecology and environmentalism. "The South can well afford to be backward" may be twisted into relevance as a plea for the "zero-sum society." Agrarianism, in fact, can be defined with glib hindsight as a Southern branch of "neo-conservatism...

There are many aspects of Cornell's imagery which seem fey, precious or backward-looking: the Christmas frosting, bats and moss and dingly dells. There is a treacherous line between sentiment and sentimentality, particularly in his evocations of his own childhood. Yet time and again, even his most gothic fantasies and his most fussily reverential evocations of dead ballerinas are plucked back from the edge by Cornell's rigor as a formal artist. The essence of the box is to contain, and within a rectangular grid, at that. Cornell enhanced this with a spare, strict sense of proportion...

...capture only small swatches of the planet's stormy atmosphere. The spacecraft executed its maneuvers with astonishing precision - near the climax of its long journey it was only 19 km (12 miles) off course. Finally, Voyager climbed upward, once again crossing just outside Saturn's rings. Casting backward glances with its cameras and instruments, it soared above the ecliptic - the plane formed by the paths of planets orbiting the sun - and headed out of the solar system to wander aimlessly among the stars...

...such "redirect," Sophomore Susan Evans, 19, says she likes U.C.S.C. and believes the professors "bend over backward" to help their students. She wants to graduate from Berkeley, though, because of its prestige. But redirected Berkeley Applicant Emily Buchbinder, 18 plans to stay at Santa Cruz, because, she believes, it has a better program in her major, politics. "I'm definitely glad I came here," she says. "I feel I belong, and I don't think I would have felt that way if I had gone to Berkeley...
