...statements read like an upside-down and backward image of Campbell's testimony. Campbell told the Waxman subcommittee that "nicotine levels in tobacco are measured at only two points in our manufacturing process: prior to the tobaccos' being blended, and then 18 months later when those leaves have been manufactured into finished cigarettes." But according to Uydess, "Nicotine levels were routinely targeted and adjusted by Philip Morris." Rivers, who was a shift manager at the Richmond plant where the company made reconstituted tobacco, stated that the nicotine level in the product was measured "approximately once per hour...

Whatever its fate (or name), the Carvey show illustrates the increasingly blurred line between programming and ads on network television. Of course, the ad-driven medium has never been a pristine art form, its practitioners not generally averse to bending over backward to please sponsors. But lately, advertising's osmotic bleed into entertainment has turned into an arterial gush. Murphy Brown wrote John F. Even ignoring his ridiculous statement that slavery was the primary cause of the war and that economics had nothing to do with it, one cannot accept the hateful and malicious attacks on an entire region of the country. Too often Southerners are painted as ignorant, backward "goons" who must be guided and taught by their sophisticated, progressive Northern compatriots. Left to itself, the South would revert to a mob of tobaccy-chewin', black-lynchin', shotgun-carrying' rednecks. This patronizing attitude does nothing but further convince Southerners that we actually might be better off alone...

...simply posturing. The demonstration that Egypt, Jordan, the Palestinian Authority and other Arab powers are joining Israel and the U.S. in the commitment to peace will isolate Hamas and other extremists. "In the Middle East," Christopher said, "if things aren't moving forward, they tend to be moving backward. That's why I want to minimize the period of being off track...
