...sharing it with only a handful of people. That made for good secret-keeping but discouraged critical thinking by the people on the front lines. When an FBI agent in Phoenix, Ariz. noticed two months before the attacks that Middle Eastern men were taking flying lessons in his backyard and alerted headquarters that something ghastly might be in the offing, agents in Washington took no action. And a month later, when a group of agents in Minnesota warned that a French-born Moroccan named Zacarias Moussaoui was in the area illegally and trying to learn how to fly a commercial...

...Smart is set to launch in Beijing, and UTStarcom is selling phones with such fancy extras as full-color screens, built-in MP3 players and digital-camera ports. Still, the perception persists that UTStarcom operates in a gray area--even as Little Smart rolls out in the MII's backyard. "But that's not necessarily a bad thing," says Wu. Best of the lot is Yang Fudong's 13-minute Backyard, Hey, Sun is Rising, following the irresistibly silly antics of four bald men brandishing sabers as they parade through city streets and homes. Yang seems inspired by Mack Sennett, Monty Python and the Beatles in A Hard Day's Night. There are relatively few paintings or drawings on show...
