Many of the ENO singers have gone on to careers in the world's major opera houses, but this recording shows them in a very bad light. Rita Hunter's light-voiced Brunnhilde and Alberto Remedios' Siegfried are effective in the more lyrical passages, but neither really withstands the strain of these most taxing of roles. Hunter turns shrill and Remedios' diction decays. Much of the supporting cast has the same trouble, or others...

...about Harvard hockey, and there's not too much I can say. Statements like, "Well, that George Hughes is pretty good, and his brother's not bad either," or "Late season collapses are one thing, but Harvard is ridiculous," although true, won't really tell you why the team wins or loses. I can spout some Truth after seeing one contest (the 6-5 overtime loss to RPI), but it's not fair to judge anyone on the basis of what he does in decrepit Troy, N.Y., where Zamboni-watching is more exciting than the nightlife...

SOON THE NEWSPAPERS were covering press conferences held by gay leaders protesting the bad name homosexuality was getting from the case. Other news conferences followed. Gacy had entertained young children as "Pogo the Clown." A spokesman for the Clown Guild called reporters together to declare that Gacy was not in the union, but rather "a free-lance artist." The spokesman noted that bookings for clowns in the Chicago area were down because mothers felt their children were scared after seeing photographs of Gacy in costume. On the whole, however, there was no real sense of city wide fear...
