...Landers could use a little advice. The columnist, who cheerfully uttered a grab-bag of insults about famous figures in a New York magazine profile published this week, today apologized to the Polish Roman Catholic Union of America for having called Pope John Paul II a "polack" in the article. "It's time to get out the wet noodle and give myself 40 lashes," read a statement. "I should not have used a slang term for Polish. It was poor judgment, and I apologize." ALTHOUGH MY WIFE AND I WERE MENtioned in your article, I was confused by its message. My reuse of plastic sandwich bags, as noted in the story, is just a tip: reuse of items leads to one bag of garbage a week where there used to be four, and to saving $22,000 by meeting a mortgage obligation early, and to hours of helpful community service because we don't need to spend that time buying more sandwich bags and similar things. ("I'm the boss," Lenny insists to Max. "Mommy's only the decision maker.") And she cheats on Lenny before he can on her. Her dalliance is a betrayal; his is a quest. Once again Allen's take on marriage is biased and bleak; he sees it as a prison for two, where the condemned may finally rise to a level of reciprocal pity. They achieve...
