...trouble with modern plastics is that they seem to be as immortal as they are useful. Plastic garbage bags litter Italy; Florida's discarded containers clog Bahama beaches. Each year one Kansas plant makes enough cellophane to wrap the earth with a 15-inch band 40 times; most of it becomes enduring garbage. Even getting rid of plastics can be dangerous. When polyvinyls like Saran Wrap are burned, they produce corrosive hydrochloric acid...

Stony Seas. The Bahamas 500 is the granddaddy of all powerboat races-a 589-mile suicide circle around the islands starting and ending at Freeport Grand Bahama. For most of the 37 boats in last week's 500, the race ended elsewhere. Driving rain drenched the crews, and visibility was down to zero as fierce squalls kicked up 5-ft. swells. Besides giving Pindling a healthy majority, the vote also meant that once and for all he had buried the predominately white United Bahamians and the "Bay Street Boys...

Pindling has also doubled the islands' casino tax to $1,000,000 a year, and as a result, Groves last month abruptly closed the gold-papered Monte Carlo gaming room at his luxurious Lucayan Beach Hotel. That leaves Grand Bahama with only the Moorish-style El Casino in operation. In Nassau, the wheels still spin at the sedate Bahamian Club, now run by Eddie Cellini, who along with his brother Dino once ran the casino at Havana's Hotel Nacional for the big-time gambler and Mafia henchman, Meyer Lansky...
