Terror and chaos were worst in the far southern city of Canton. Originally this was the bailiwick of President Chiang Kai-Shek, and from it he sallied, three years ago, at the head of the Nationalist Army which proceeded to conquer all China (TIME, April 5, 1926, et seq.). Last week General Ho Ying-ching, whom President Chiang had sent to defend Canton, found himself so hard pressed that he adopted arriving measures. The first was to send out river workers and peasants to pick up the dead, bloated bodies of soldiers who constantly floated downstream from obscure engagements above...

In the past she has subsidized both Governor "Young Chang" Hsueh-Liang and his late, great father "Old Chang" Tso-Lin. She wants above everything to prevent the great powers from intervening in her bailiwick. Again appropriate last week was a famed cartoon, the Magnum Opus of Shanghai's North China Daily Herald. It shows a bespectacled bird which greatly resembles Prince Chichibu of Japan perching with a wink above the apple of Japanese eyes, Manchuria...
...small nations are insistent German, French, Spanish Italian and Polish are the languages spoken by the largest number of individuals. Presumably, Hungarians and Bulgarians and Latvians, if they wished to influence their colleagues, would have to address the houses in some language that is not understood in their own bailiwick...
Still under indictment for murder last week, but by no means under arrest, was that frank and open swaggerthug, General Chang Tsung-chang, rich with the loot of Shantung, his former bailiwick. Fortnight ago Chang was-as he later expressed it-"handling a pistol." The thing went off and killed handsome young Prince Hsien Kai, cousin of China's deposed Boy Emperor Henry P'u-yi ("Henry") (TIME, Aug. 12). The shooting occurred in the garden of Chang's hotel at Beppu, a Japanese island summer resort. Last week the Beppu police made no protest when indicted...

This is the second tilt of the annual two-game series, the first of which the Crusader sluggers annexed last Saturday, 10 to 3. The Harvard aggregation should do better this afternoon, back in its own bailiwick, than it did last week on Worcester soil, but the struggle is sure to be keenly contested even if the Harvard pitching staff is able to seem the Holy Cross slugging, and about this there is some doubt...
