...Arafat is not taking the bait. The erstwhile prisoner of Ramallah demanded (and, in substantial part, received) an Israeli withdrawal from recently reoccupied Palestinian towns as a precondition for talks, but even then was in no hurry to commit himself to General Anthony Zinni's cease-fire plan...

...Back in New York Cahn produced a Broadway comedy, "Devils Galore," with Winchell's daughter Walda in the cast. Later Cahn used Walda as angel bait at fund-raising parties. To support him, Walda ran through her parents' allowance and was forced to sell the mink coat they had given her. (In the movie Susie is usually seen wearing a mink coat J.J. gave her. "This coat is your brother," Dallas grumbles. "I've always hated this coat.") What can we say? Walda loved the lug, and Walter didn't; he thought Bill was pulling a Cahn job. According...

...this technology and targeting has made sleight of hand even more prevalent in movie advertising. Several marketing executives who didn't want their names used told TIME that bait-and-switch trailer tactics are as integral a part of the movie business as Oscar parties and backstabbing. Trailers often have music that is not in the movie, and older actors are banished from spots destined for MTV. Such lying in wait--or "shooting over bait"--is legal in Texas and defended by hunters. "It promotes a clean kill," says Gardner. Other sportsmen are troubled by the practice. Stan Rauch of the Montana Bowhunters Association believes that fed animals are tame animals and should thus be off limits. "Animals become habituated to people when they depend on us for food," he says...

...oversight dims his chances terribly. Along the same lines, Bedroom’s Tom Wilkinson received no Globe nomination, but his recognition record is otherwise sterling, and his chances for an Oscar nomination look excellent. I think that Penn, whose role as a mentally retarded parent is pure Oscar bait, will sneak in to grab the last Best Actor slot, despite mixed-to-poor reviews for his film. Will Smith, on the other hand, will probably miss out on a nomination for his unimpressive and largely unrewarded performance in the meandering Ali. A chance at the Oscar will also elude...
