Mill Alexeivitch Balakirev is famous among other things for having organized the Free School of Music. It was this that gave the impetus and the direction to most of modern Russian composing, and it was through this that he exerted such a profound influence on men like Rimsky-Korsakov. His own compositions, however, although few, are as noteworthy as his influence.
