...Trunk. Bald, tubby Abe Burrows, 38, says worriedly, "I don't have the right background for show business-I wasn't born in a trunk." Brooklyn-raised, Burrows majored in Latin and accounting, got his first job in Wall Street ("I went right up the ladder: runner, board boy, bond salesman-and then I was fired"). A script he wrote for Mimic Eddie Garr gave him a start in radio. Then he began satirizing Tin Pan Alley songs at private parties and convulsed Connoisseurs Groucho Marx and Danny Kaye with such numbers as The Girl With the Three...

...T.W.A. plane at La Guardia Field last week stepped a bald, strong-jawed man carrying two tiny wooden boxes. Inside the boxes, carefully packed between a layer of mud and some wet weeds, were 200 tiny (¼-in. diameter) snails (Bullinus truncatus). The snails were heavily infested with larvae of the fluke Schistosoma haematobium, which burrows under the skin and travels through the bloodstream to nest in and around the bladder. The infestation causes Bilharziasis (a form of schistosomiasis), resulting in passage of blood in the urine. Half of Egypt's 19,000,000 people suffer from it; throughout...

Once it looked as though Mussolini's own ghost had returned when one Luigi Filosa, a Fascist henchman, got up to speak; Filosa was short and bald, stood squarely with his hands on his hips and stuck out his lower lip in characteristic Mussolinian truculence. From dark corners of the auditorium drifted snatches of Fascist hymns. A philosophy professor, who shouted: "Democracy is a fraud!" was arrested by the watchful secret service men. The hysterical speakers babbled on. Yelled a woman teacher: "They come, these Americans, these ignorant bushmen, to show us-the heirs of Michaelangelo...

Still robed in his prestige, little Justice Frankfurter left the stand-to be followed by egg-bald Supreme Court Justice Stanley Reed, under whom Hiss had served when Reed was solicitor general. Like Frankfurter-and like Illinois' Governor Adlai Stevenson and Ambassador-at-large Philip Jessup, both of whom testified by written deposition-Reed agreed that Alger Hiss was a man of "loyalty, integrity and veracity...

...mammoth was a baby perhaps only a few days old. It was still bald, like its relatives, the modern elephants, rather than hairy like its own parents. It stood about 3 ft. high and weighed more than 200 lbs. One day, some 15,000 years ago, something happened to the baby mammoth. It may have stumbled into a bog or into quicksand, and been unable to get out. Perhaps the bank of a prehistoric river caved in on it. It sank down into the cold, Pleistocene mud, which kept out the air and preserved the body. With the coming...
