The music on Me Myself An Eye expresses Mingus's interest and sympathetic understanding of the sources of black American music. The blues, gospel, church music, the spiritual ballad--these are the wellsprings of Mingus's musical heritage, and all are represented here. What a time, indeed. The current ballad by Rhodesian Singer Clem Tholet reflected the country's mood as Tholet's father-in-law, who happens to be Rhodesian Prime Minister Ian Smith, led his white countrymen one step closer to black majority rule. ...break even, and you can't get out of the game." Wiz Composer Charlie Smalls is a gifted comic writer, and soon Nipsey Russell, whose rusty tin man is easily the best characterization of the film, sings an oozy and oleaginous Smalls ballad, Slide Some Oil to Me. To ward the end, awful Evillene, the Wicked Witch of the West (Mabel King), rumbles out a menacing hard-rocker, Don't No body Bring Me No Bad News...
