This futuristic ballad sounds as though it were composed by a computer at the Rand Corp., but In the Year 2525 is the product of two country-pickin' guitarists from Lincoln, Neb., Denny Zager and Rick Evans, who a year ago were thinking about the future mostly in terms of the source of their next meal. Only last November, Zager, 25, and Evans, 26, were working as a duo, trying their best to please the regular customers in a Lincoln motel lounge. With a borrowed $500 they recorded 2525, which has a simple and schmaltzy tune and a chugging...

...caretaker's mistress, Sheila Hart is in character as a woman (Meg) relaxed and yet confident as she consciously plays ringmaster to the living theatre that is her brothel. In just a few seconds, she similarly includes the audience in her barrage of insults and confidences. Her bitter ballad near the end of the second act, where she is backed by the male members of the cast, is simultaneously heartbreaking and triumphant, and I'm sure that if I were more of an Irishman it would have brought me pretty close to tears...

The notes would stumble at first, and the tremolo might widen into an uncontrolled wobble of sound-but sooner or later Hawk would explode into a solo that recalled earlier days: warm, austere, unfailingly rhythmic even in the midst of a caressing ballad. "He was full of music...

...themselves as "studs," but they are guys who swing from both sides of the bed. Around them swirls another kind of urban flotsam: maimed, embittered victims with out a prayer of sexual gratification or a hope of companionship. The film adaptation of Midnight Cowboy may grant that ballad too much orchestration, but it preserves its essential compassion and humor...

...dignity, stalks senselessly through the film like a man in someone else's nightmare. The dreamer is Film Maker Carl Foreman, whose shoddy special effects and flaccid production soon turn Mackennas Gold into solid dross. To fill up the film, he has José Feliciano twanging a narrative ballad and Quincy Jones's thunderously atmospheric music throughout. The result sounds like pebbles clattering down the Grand Canyon...
