Oxford University is composed of no less than twenty-one separate colleges, all of which have their own officers and buildings and are situated in various parts of the town, each college consisting of a chapel, library, dining or great hall, quadrangle and dormitories. Balliol and Merton divide the honor of being the oldest colleges, as the former was founded in 1260 and the latter four years afterward.
