But in leading his listeners to think that the U.S. may be on the verge of bargaining away NATO's strength, or about to make a cynical deal with the Russians, Harold Stassen flew his trial balloon too high, forced Secretary Dulles to haul it down discreetly at his press conference...

...only as a historical document." The document was crudely etched. Because both funds and the spare time of modern scientists were at a premium, there were few rehearsals and few retakes. Budgetary corners were sharply cut, e.g., when Seaborg asked for a relief globe he got a weather balloon, and when that burst, made do with a beach ball. When the satellite finally reaches space it may be followed on its orbit by a frail, light, short-lived companion. Developed by William J. O'Sullivan Jr. (following a long-discussed idea), the inflated sub-satellite is a balloon of Mylar plastic .0025 in. thick covered with an aluminum film .0006 in. thick. They were drifting over the sandhill cattle country of northwest Nebraska, and little by little the descent of the balloon decreased to a safer rate. As the gondola approached the ground, the crew detached the gasbag, which soared off on the wind. The gondola dropped the few remaining feet, its fall cushioned by a plastic shock absorber, and the two men from Mars stepped out. Almost at once a light airplane piloted by Don Higgins of Ainsworth, Neb. landed beside...
