Reagan constantly repeats that California is the world's largest producer of pornography: "The biggest joke in Paris, France, is that instead of selling French postcards, they're selling California postcards." Reagan has come out foursquare for a radical anti-obscenity proposal on the November ballot called the CLEAN amendment. In favoring it, the candidate is in direct opposition not only to Pat Brown but also to his own running mate, Robert Finch, the astute progressive Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor, who was Nixon's presidential-campaign manager...
...incredible disaster. A power failure shut down voting machines in Hagerstown -- western Maryland's largest city -- for several hours. At one Baltimore polling place, someone forgot the key, and voters were jammed up for an hour during the morning rush. But Prince Georges County had the biggest problem. The ballot had 215 names on it, and voters averaged six minutes in the booths. During the evening rush, lines stretched out and voters had to wait a reported 7 1/2 hours. Many turned back and went home. Sickles might have lost the election because of the long ballot, since...
...brings to mind the remark (originally made about William Scranton) that he is not half the man his mother was. Everyone knows that Liberal Party boss Alex Rose picked him as the Party's best chance to keep third place in the state and Line C on the ballot for the next four years. (The Liberal Party always does much better when it does not endorse Democrats than when it does.) The Liberals' diminishing vote has clearly forced them to oppose Democrats whenever they can -- rather than, as was the original raison d'etre of their party, whenever they ought...
...that is all old hat. When the November election is over and the tax has presumably passed a popular vote (it is on the ballot) change should come. The General Court (legislature) should decide whether to tax all books or no books at all. Right now, the way the change goes seems almost less important than the change itself. Either way the sum of money involved seems negligible. But the continued confusion--a confusion which even the bureaucrats in the state tax office admit--is foolish and undermines the confidence the people have...
...neighborhood city halls. The review board, now in operation, can only recommend disciplinary action against police officers. It is, nonetheless, vehemently opposed by the Conservative Party and the Policeman's Benevolent Association, which have collected more than 55,000 signatures to put the issue on the November ballot. Lindsay's pet reform, the establishment of neighborhood city halls to handle residents' problems and complaints, was temporarily frustrated by city legislators. The Board of Estimate and the City Council overrode the Mayor's veto, passing an appropriations bill without funds for the little city halls. (It was the first time anyone...
