Retailers have always considered entertainment essential to the shopping experience, but in the new malls diversions have taken on a life of their own. The American Wilderness Experience at Ontario features 70 species of live animals, including roadrunners, bats, sea otters and even a giant yellow banana slug, together with a simulator ride and video and interactive nature displays. Billed as "edutainment," the fun and games lead into a store peddling environmental knickknacks and a restaurant called the Wilderness Grill. "If we capture just 3% of the [20 million] people passing through the mall, we'll be doing great," says...

Although these potions are costly, Harnett's will accept checks in an emergency at the Natural Juices bar. For a mere $3.50 one can enjoy their fresh mango and banana fruit smoothies. ...course, none of us needs grapes at all. Grapes are nearly pure sugar, with far less vitamin C than an orange, and lacking the potassium of a banana or the dietary fiber of an apple. Don't get me wrong, grapes taste great. But there are plenty of other things that taste great that we don't have in the dining halls. (Chocolate bars come to mind.) And if you're such a big fan that you can't wait to make it home for the holidays where (presumably) a juicy bowl of your favorite fruit awaits your arrival...
