...Bananas-Early Woody Allen, and while this film surely lacks the polish of his later work, it has more of the wild, reckless humor and endless one-liners that made Woody famous before everyone knew he was neurotic and an intellectual, too. In this one, he plays a nebbish, of course, who by weird circumstance ends up leading a Latin American revolution and reclaiming his lost sweetheart (Louise Lasser). Best moments Howard Cosell covering the assassination of a banana republic dictator and Woody ordering 500 hamburgers to go, 300 with cole slaw...

...reluctantly, the student takes the first step towards Decadency, Degeneracy, Perdition. She quietly unties her Adidas and proceeds to peel off her shoes, socks and sweaters, revealing her unhealthy, banana-colored skin. Having bravely ventured this far, she risks a glance at the other guilty ones. To her astonishment, Harvard beach is littered with uninhabited tennis shoes, crewneck sweaters and T-shirts--even with unread textbooks and blank paper passively but menacingly there. That decision is couched in corporate double-think that makes impossible any clear interpretation of its deliberately complex guidelines on supporting shareholder resolutions. In addition, the gibberish that owning non-voting stock in banks that loan money to South Africa or its public corporations is less reprehensible than owning voting stock is both analytically and morally...

...worse is Buffett's recycling in lieu of new ideas. Like "Cowboy in the Jungle" from the new album. It's a vagabond expatriate song with a couple of funny lines, but he did the same idea much better last year in his cover of Steve Good-man's "Banana Republics." And the title cut from Son of a Son of a Sailor is almost a bibliography of the half-dozen sailing paeans he's written before...
