Nyasaland. In the third and most primitive of the three federal states, the days were full of the sounds of new detention camps being built to hold African supporters of the volatile Dr. Hastings Banda (see box). Already 560 were being detained. Sir Roy has yet to reveal the evidence that there had ever been a black plot to massacre the whites-the major excuse in the first place for the wave of repression that had so far killed 50 Nyasa blacks but no whites. Neither had anybody proved that the blacks of Northern Rhodesia were about...

...week before, the government had arrested and exiled Dr. Hastings Banda, the Pied Piper of Nyasa nationalism. To justify its action, the government had hinted at an African plot to massacre the whites. Throughout the territory there were scattered instances of intimidation, property destruction, and the interruption of communications...

...anxious to assert its authority and frightened by the recent outbreaks in the Belgian Congo, the Federal government's reaction was hasty and excessive. A state of emergency was declared, the African Congress was banned, and Dr. Banda and many of its leaders were arrested. While these measures may have been necessary to preserve the peace, the use of white Rhodesian reservists in Nyasaland, rather than the British ones available in Kenya, was not needed, and is certain to stimulate bad feeling. Equally unfortunate was the recent forceful expulsion of a visiting Labourite Member of Parliament, who was accused, perhaps...
