...Ethan Holtzman met Chhom Nimol at a nightclub in Long Beach, California's Little Phnom Penh. Inspired by cassette tapes Ethan hauled home from a backpacking trip to Southeast Asia, the American brothers had set about the rather quixotic task of forming a Khmer rock band. They'd learned a couple of songs, but needed a singer to give them life. They found one that day in Chhom, a recent émigré with a knockout voice. Dengue Fever, that singular, strange and wonderful ensemble, was born...
...Cambodia with their friend John Pirozzi, an American director and cinematographer. That trip is the subject of Sleepwalking Through the Mekong, a DVD/CD combination released in April. The writer, who was reared in Newark and still lives in the city, is a voice from...

The crowd was a mix of Korean and American army families. The 8th Army Band featured both Korean and American soldiers, and they played both Gershwin’s “Summertime” and Korean folk songs. The festival was a balance between two very proud cultures; hopefully such understanding can be reached on more serious military matters as well...
...restrictions prevent the yuan from trading freely around the world or being fully convertible to other currencies in all financial transactions. The yuan's value is pegged to a basket of currencies likely dominated by the U.S. dollar and is permitted to change each day only within a narrow band. Under such limitations, China's dreams for the yuan cannot progress very far. (Read "Outlook for U.S. Dollar Darkens...
