It’s hard to tell how much of the music in Digital Ash is electronically produced and how much of it is just Oberst’s studio band. Either way, there’s much more here (and somehow, much less) than a boy and a guitar: the mix is thick with drums, synthesized instrumentation, and gee-wiz effects. The first track, “Time Code,” opens with two minutes of electronic noodling accompanied by bizarre background panting, presumably from an onanistic Oberst. Just in case the avant wheezing didn?...

The bad translations (and the frequent intrusion of a gruff gravelly-voiced “rapper”) can’t help but bring to mind the debt the band owes to Björk’s Icelandic ’80s band the Sugarcubes, for both groups’ consciousness of (and commitment to) the fact that their translations might not translate so well into English. ...have been listening to my brother's group Cryptic Warning, an awesome death metal band, since they first formed five years ago. I'm impressed with how long they have been able to stay together since they started it in high school. They're always having shows with cheap ticket prices at bars in Cambridge or Boston (check Crypticwarning.com). Right now, I am listening to Ani DiFranco's Reckoning.
