Delightful at its best and generally fun, Fiorello! does have its weaknesses: a few flop songs and scenes, and a less lively second act. The show's chief liability is that bane of musicals, love, which-requited or unrequited-can seem banal. Even so, the show's chief asset. Director Abbott's testing everywhere for pace and pep, helps to shorten the doldrums. And for the evening as a whole, the reaction to the Abbott test is decidedly positive...
Cooper is frightened, but he cannot give in. His heroes embody for him the esoteric principle, the precious bane that alone can heal his life and save his soul: courage. "They have it. I have to save it." Of these setbacks, 23 have been to Yale. His best years were with the 1936-37 squad, which snapped Yale's 175 meet winning streak, and the 1937-38 team, which repeated the feat of the previous season by defeating the Bulldogs to hold a 24-meet winning string for the Crimson...
...symbolic tract of man's nature and of Nature's man. To the north, a new high school, clarion of the New Learning, expression of the finest in the Modern Temper. Over the entire scene hangs a dark cloud of necessity, the Antithesis of the twentieth century Synthesis, the bane of the American Spirit--Concord is without a garbage dump...
